An interesting side note:
Johann Heinrich Hellbusch is a brother of our great grandfather, Heinrich Hellbusch and according to our records, Johann Heinrich Hellbusch had a son by the name of Carl, born January 30, 1864. Carl married Elsie Neemeyer. Elsie Neemeyer was a sister of our grandfather, Henry Neemeyer, on our mother's (Hilda Hellbusch, nee: Neemeyer) side of the family. In 1930 the Hellbuschs and Neemeyers were again joined in marriage through our parents, Louis and Hilda (Neemeyer) Hellbusch. (See their wedding page) |
As you can see above Johann Heinrich Hellbusch lost several close relatives during the time of 1865 to 1868 His father, Johann Hellbusch, died October 24, 1865. Anna Kunnemann was hired to care for the children and Johann Heinrich ended up marrying her. The death of his father several years earlier. The death of his mother, wife and daughter within a very short time, in 1868. With all the advertisements for farmland in America. The Franco-Prussian war on the horizon. He did not want his sons to "put on the hat.", go to war. This all contributed to his decision to leave Germany. In 1869, Johann Heinrich and Anna, along with five children, came to America. They settled in Platte County Nebraska, thus becoming the first Hellbusch family to live in Nebraska. Johann Heinrich and Anna had eight children. Because of very harsh living conditions and incomplete medical care, only three of the children survived to adulthood, Carl, Willian Conrad, and Martha Louise. |
Heinrich Hellbusch and his wife, Geshe Margarethe (Nee: Schulze) came to America in 1887 along with their remaining family. They, too, settled in Platte County, Nebraska before moving to Nance County, Nebraska. (Several sons came at an earlier date. It is thought C.D. came in 1884 or 1885. Wilhelm was a stow-away at approximately 16 years of age and Georg Friedrich Hellbusch arrived in the Baltimore Port June 2, 1886) |
According to information we have, our grandpa, George Fredrich Hellbusch, had a brother, Johann Friedrich Hellbusch born December 26, 1857 (Above) that stayed in Germany. See Germany Relatives In addition his uncle, Hermann Hellbusch (born 25 JUN 1833 Haast. Died: 11 JUN 1883 Lehe) that died in Germany along with the death of his wife and several children from typhoid fever. (See Below) |
With Heinrich coming to America, that left one of his sons, Johann Friedrich, still living in Germany and raising his family there. A lot of the Hellbusch decendents in America, (and there are many) came from the above two groups or the surviving sons of Hermann Hellbusch below. |
Hermann Hellbusch, a brother to Johann Heinrich Hellbusch and Heinrich, along with his wife died in Germany 1884 or 1885. Perhaps of typhoid fever. With their death, there were two surviving sons, Frederick and Eilert. In 1885 (could be 1886), Johann Heinrich sent for the two nephews, Frederick and Eilert to join him in America. In 1886, Johann Heinrich sent for another nephew, George Fredrich Hellbusch, youngest son of Heinrich Hellbusch. (Could be the same trip. There is some confusion about this information) (See Ship Records for George Hellbusch) |
