Don was born in Timber Creek Township of Nance County in Nebraska. We lived on a farm with a creek running through it. In this case, it was named Timber Creek. Because of the influence of the creek, the area was known as Timber Creek. There was always some place for a young boy to explore and pretend. It might be as a cowboy rounding up cattle or fighting off rustlers. A few arrow heads had been found and that just added to the imagination of this young boy. When not exploring and fighting off outlaws, there were always chores that had to be done that all farm boys do, although not always on time.
The area had been an Indian reservation until the year 1879 when it was opened for settling by the "Pioneers". Because of the strong Indian influence of the past, some of the areas had received their names from this Indian history. The most significant name for the immediate area, was Red Wing. Our Grand Dad, George Hellbusch, farmed for over forty years what was known as Red Wing Farm. All the children of the neighborhood went to Red Wing School, a one room country school. Also in the neighborhood, was Red Wing Cemetery. Some of the early burials in Red Wing Cemetery had the Hellbusch name. During the summer of 1998, Don and Marie along with Loren and Ann traveled to visit the house where Don was born. It is still standing even though it is a little over grown. If you would like to see the home as it looked at that time compared to the appearance in 1998, along with some notes taken from Hilda Hellbusch's diary, it is just a click away. |
